Iolite is a extreme example of a color shifting property called pleochroism. Iolite will appear violet blue, sometimes clear, shift it again and you can see a golden yellow! This unique phenomenon helped the Vikings on their sea journeys. The Vikings would gaze through a thin piece of Iolite. They were then able to tell by the shifting color, their navigating position of the sun.
