Tahitian Cultured Pearls

Tahitian Pearl Ring  Tahitian cultured pearls are often called “Black Pearls,” are found in the South Seas in turquoise blue lagoons of the French Polynesia.  A living symbol of purity and perfection, Tahitian Pearls are known as the “Jewels of the Sea.”  Tahitian Pearls have exceptional value and rarity.

The black lipped oyster known as the Pinctada Magaritifera are the mollusk that Tahitian Pearls are born from.  These giant mollusks can live up to 30 years, weigh up to 11 pounds and can grow up to a foot in diameter.  Although only one in 15,000 oysters produced a natural pearl, the inner shell was so popular with the European button industry that the mollusk was eventually devastated.

A complex cultivation process has resurrected the pearl industry in the French Polynesia.  The government there has very strict regulations on the pearl industry which assured the quality and the value of the pearls.

Tahitian Pearls generally range from 8 to 13 millimeters; however, some farms produce Tahitians up to 20 millimeters.  Tahitian Pearl shapes are round, drop, circles and baroques.

Tahitian Pearl colors range from dark grey to greenish grey and dark purple.  Tahitians sometimes are greenish black like a peacock feather.  Tahitian Pearls are noted for their metallic sheen and changing hues (colors.)
