Gemstone Inclusions! Good or Bad?

As I was faceting a beautiful Oregon Sunstone today I was totally amazed at it's beauty.  It made me start thinking about gemstone inclusions.

When most people think about a gem having inclusions they automatically think that it's a bad thing!  While that may be the case with Diamonds it is not always the case with colored gemstones.  Quite often with a colored gem it's just the opposite.  It's the inclusions that give the gemstone it's beauty.

In the case of Oregon Sunstone for instance, the inclusion of all of that copper just makes the gem more beautiful.  The copper inclusions make the gem almost seem like it's alive as the light hits it from different angles!  The gem looks like there is a fire glowing inside of it which is totally amazing to say the least.

Another gem that quickly comes to mind that has the inclusions make the gem more beautiful is Quartz.  I am talking about Rutilated Quartz. The rutile inclusions don't take away from the beauty of the gem but enhances the gem's beauty.  There are many other colored gemstones that are enhanced by their inclusions.

So the next time you look at a colored gem, remember that the inclusions inside of the gem doesn't automatically mean that it's a bad thing.  Each gemstone has it's own place in the world.  The inclusions make each gem unique!
