Morganite was named in honor of an avid customer of Tiffany's, John Pierpont Morgan, Tiffany's enthusiastically promoted Morganite.

Morganite is a variety of beryl, which makes it a relative of emerald and aquamarine. This pink beryl's beauty and limited availability make it a favorite among collectors.

To bring Morganite to the attention of the public, there has been some attempt in the jewelry trade to change the name of Morganite to "pink emerald." This is more of a  marketing ploy.  Morganite is still the official name for Pink beryl.
