Sunstone or can be also called Heliolite, is the State Gem of Oregon, a prime source for this beautiful gem. The name Heliolite has been derived from the Greek 'helios' and 'lithos,' which mean 'sun' and 'stone'.
Sunstone is one of the few gemstones that are 100% natural. Gemstone quality Sunstone is only found in Oregon and was formed and crystallized by ancient lava flows. Sunstone was formed in molten lava and was discharged onto the surface with the help of a volcano. The lava then weathered away and fiery crystals of sunstone were then released.
These Oregon Sunstones come in a spectacular array of colors, flaming oranges to pale pinks, peaches, reds and the rare greens. Some Sunstone gems have a unique phenomenon, called Schiller, tiny copper platelets that catch the light with a lustrous glow. If you want a unique, 100% natural gemstone, created by nature that is durable for your next custom piece of jewelry choose a beautiful Sunstone.
Sunstone is rated 6.5 to 7.2 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Native Americans in Oregon once picked up the fiery stones and used them in the “Medicine Wheel” ceremonies to help them make a connection with the healing light of the sun.
Sunstone is regarded a gemstone of freedom, personal power and expanded consciousness.
What is Concave Faceting?
The Concave cut is three dimensional; where as the traditional flat faceted cut gemstones are two dimensional. The concave cut not only has facets in the length and width of the gemstone but also has conical shaped facets to create more depth. This third dimension further refracts the light as more ambient light, thus returning it to the eye as more brilliance in the gemstone. A two dimensional gemstone will need light to show its brilliance, a Concave cut gemstone will reflect the smallest amount of light. The gem will return to the eye, brilliance from even a small single candle that has been lit in a darkened room.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, some people prefer the traditional faceted design over the innovative Concave faceted gems. They like the more classic look of a traditional faceted gemstone.
Some of the disadvantages of Concave cutting are that darker gems like Ruby, tend too look less attractive when Concave cut, the gems turning out murky and less attractive. There is also a higher weight loss than in traditional faceting and Concave faceting requires more labor resulting in a much higher cost to the finished gemstone.
